We interrupt this programming to scream: "There's the white deer!"

Blooming in Virginia forests in May: Putty-root Orchid or Adam and Eve Orchid!

This is last night's blood moon, or flower moon, over the course of an hour-- between 11:30 pm (brightest image) and 12:30 am (darkest).

This sweet Phoebe is raising five chicks in my backyard. It's hard to imagine a more dedicated parent bird--her insect-feeding schedule is non-stop, all day.

First some lunch, and then a bath. It's all in a day's work! #carolinawren

A total lunar eclipse turned the moon red at midnight. It was worth staying up for!

I found a dramatic stand of Pink Lady's Slipper Orchids on the Potts Rail Trail today.

We have names for our frequent visitors, and in the case of squirrels, the names often derive from the condition of their ears or tail. For instance, there's Earless and Choppy, both of whom have lost parts of their ears to fights or sibling nibbling (sad but true!). As of this week we have a "new" squirrel, a baby, with a perfect tail and lovely, tall ears to admire (at least for now!).

Here in the mountains we don't see a lot of sandpipers, but they do migrate through on their way to breeding grounds on the tundra. This is the Least Sandpiper, a lover of mudflats.
