Pine warblers are unusual warblers in that they are year-round residents in much of the South, and they readily eat seeds. Consequently they often show up at feeding stations in winter. As their name suggests, they are found in and around pine trees. According to All About Birds, this is "a large warbler with a stout bill. Adult males have a yellow throat, a yellow-olive back, and blurry streaking on the sides. Note the broken yellow eyering and white lower belly." #pinewarbler

The Red-headed Woodpecker is a classic! Both male and female adults have a bright red head, white belly, black back, and solid white wing patches. First-year juveniles have a brown head that begins to turn red over the winter. (If you look closely, the preening bird in the last video is currently molting into adult plumage.)

It's mostly too cold to go outside to play. Luckily the birds like to perch outside my window now and then. I've come to appreciate how window glass can soften their portraits, especially on a gray winter's day. #easternbluebird

Winter Goldfinches are much-more-muted than their summertime selves, but the hints of yellow they bring to January are a gift to the winter weary.
