When I was a child, finding a box turtle was fairly common, but still a very big deal when it happened to me. I was totally enamored by them. Now, for many reasons, it is quite rare to come across a box turtle at all. I guess today was my very special day. #boxturtle #pandapaspond #jeffersonnationalforest

I've been following this family of pileated woodpeckers all summer. Mom raised two offspring, a male and a female. The male was bigger and stronger from the start, so he's always been more independent. The young female is still with her Mom, wanting to be fed now and then. I just love when they stop in to visit my feeders!

Usually birds molt slowly, such that you don’t really notice it. Occasionally though, jays and cardinals will drop all of their head feathers at one time, leaving them almost bald. No worries! They will recover very quickly!❤️

What happens to shed antlers? They become a nutritious snack for rodents who need to gnaw on hard things in order to manage their ever-growing teeth! Swipe left to watch this guy file his teeth down!

What's better than three grandkids in mushroom pajamas? How about having them all home with their parents for the first time since the pandemic started? I'm so grateful for this blessing!

In the evening, after the rain, a walk to the bench for a view of Brush Mountain. And for Grace…a chance to attentively watch the bunnies grazin’ in the grass.

I thought I heard an oriole singing outside, so I put out an orange (a little bait for a photo). The oriole never appeared, but I did reel in somebody else! #graysquirrel
