I'm going to miss the hummingbirds but I know they have to go. Thanks for that last flash of red yesterday, and safe travels, friend.

Our Saturday night date was a sunset walk up to Bald Knob on the top of Salt Pond Mountain in Giles. If you haven't been there at sunset before, I highly recommend it!

There's been an explosion of color in my garden this week. Late in the planting season, I spread a pack of cosmos in an empty vegetable row, thinking...what the heck--we might as well use the space for something... and who knows? ..maybe we'll get some late flowers in the fall. Well, I think this is a case of serendipity, both for me and for the pollinators.

A beautiful September day wandering the balds of Grayson Highlands with my sweetiepie.

Out of my backlog of photos, I'm choosing my front-door neighbor and friend, Jerome, (AKA American Toad), to witness to my mood these last few weeks of summer. Quiet, pensive, waiting for something to emerge from the surroundings…but not sure what exactly. In the stillness that follows trauma, one conclusion always stands out. Embrace each day with gratitude and kindness. Rise early, stop and smell the flowers, and pet those bumpy toads you meet along the way. Seize the day.

Summer fields, fencerows, and roadsides are lighting up now with late-summer wildflowers. Look for Joe Pye Weed, Blue Lobelia, Yellow Crownbeard, Ironweed, Jewelweed, Sneezeweed, Tansy, Goldenrod, Queen Anne's Lace, Boneset, and Pokeweed--among others!
